General

IRC is an abbreviation of Internet Relay Chat, meaning a real-time chatting protocol in internet which consists of users and channels (rooms). People can talk to each other privatelly or publically in one of the channels (there are thousands of them). There are several Elma related channels, the first and the biggest one is #across, on which we mainly concentrate on now.

The #across was founded by px and bluu in the end of the 1998. At the beginning there were only about 5-10 users at the prime time and the main language was Finnish. One user by one it grew and in the 2000 there were 20-30. Yet the most users were Finnish but more and more Swedish and Norwegian players started to hang around and therefore people used all those languages in addition to English. Moreover some underground channels were founded. The #across name remained eventhough the new version, Elasto Mania (released in the February 2002), had a new name.

Elma got more popular and people started to get 24/7 internet connections which both increased the number of users. More nationalities were represented such as Czech, Hungarian, Canadian, American, Danish, Russian... In 2005, when the amount of users had grown to about 80 ppl of 15 different nationalities, it was quite apparrent that a common language should be defined and use of other languages restricted to keep the channel organised and generally understandable to most.

In 2001 #battle was founded by Petri, Ari_ahf and onlainari and the primary function is having a place to play battles. Later on it has grown the second biggest Elma channel. The first years the battles were organized manually and the most enthusiastic players made results. In 2003 MagnusB coded a battlebot (and since 2004 skint0r has continued the project) to make all the organizing automatic and since then people have played thousands and thousands battles.
